Hear from our students

Mariam

My journey at Vita-Salute San Raffaele started almost 6 years ago. It had always been my dream to study abroad, and thanks to the suggestion of a family friend, I discovered the English program for Medicine and Surgery offered by San Raffaele University in Italy. Recognized as one of the best private medical universities and research institutes in Italy, I saw this as a great opportunity.
The courses offered at this university had a great impact on my knowledge and passion for medicine.
The highlight of my medical school journey was participating in clinical rotations and the possibility to learn from some of the greatest doctors in Italy.
Looking back, adapting to a new country, language, and environment presented significant challenges. However, the university's warm and welcoming atmosphere soon made me feel part of the San Raffaele family.
Becoming a member of UniSR's sports teams, particularly the rugby and running teams, was a great honor. These experiences taught me the essence of teamwork, friendship, and allowed me to immerse myself fully into university life.
Undoubtedly, medical school posed numerous challenges and difficulties. However, navigating through these challenges gave me the opportunity to grow as an individual and as a future physician. Overall, being part of this big family is a great honor to me.

Aditya

Hello! I am an Indian student in the 5th year of the IMD Program.
Since my childhood, I wanted to be a doctor. I heard about the university from an ex-student of UniSR and in October 2019, I joined the institute as a fresher. The course content here is very organized. Initially, emphasis is given to basic sciences followed by subjects pertaining to medicine. The college is well equipped with modern technologies and facilities which make learning easier. Moreover, our professors are very experienced and are always ready to help. The administrative staff are very efficient and guide students effectively.
Everyone here is very friendly, warm and welcoming. This helped me adjust easily to campus life. Personally, I feel learning Italian is helpful for adapting to university life. The various clubs and activities here help in building a good rapport and bond between students of all nationalities.
All these things together have made UniSR special and perfect for me!

Study plan

The first five semesters of the International MD Program focus on foundational scientific principles and preclinical topics, delivered through a multidisciplinary approach. The program stands out from the first year due to its unique emphasis on the multifaceted role of the physician.

This is achieved through:

  • Language and Behaviour: a distinctive course in the Italian context, combining medical/biological, psychological, and philosophical/anthropological perspectives.
  • The importance of being a Medical Doctor: highlights the historical and bioethical significance of being a physician in the modern world, drawing inspiration from Renaissance concepts.
  • The Scientific Method, Quantitative Biology, and the Art of Medicine: students engage in pragmatic exploration of science's wonders through collaborations with internationally renowned researchers.
  • Nursing: a practical 25-hour immersive experience, allowing students to witness firsthand the challenges faced by healthcare professionals in patient care.

Specialization Tracks

The program covers acute patient care, including internal medicine, emergency surgery, and intensive care. Starting from the sixth semester, students can customize their education to align with their career goals, choosing from four specialized tracks:

  • General Track: Offers elective courses in internal medicine, surgery, diagnostics, and research, allowing a personalized path.
  • Medicine and Surgery Track: Exposes students to practical, hands-on experience starting from the second year, ensuring early and extensive clinical exposure to develop a solid foundation in medicine and surgery.
  • Global Health Track: A  truly unique track, developed in collaboration with SDA Bocconi School of Management, GHT emphasizes public medicine, health management, economics, and access to healthcare in low-income countries. The track prepares students to understand healthcare as a social responsibility, focusing on global health challenges, including resource-limited settings, complex environments, and even war scenarios.
Additionally, students have the opportunity to gain practical experience in low-resource contexts by working at the OSF dei Poveri di Milano. This hands-on experience in such distinct and challenging environments allows students to apply their medical training in real-world, underserved settings, further enriching their understanding of global health issues.
  • Translational Research Track: immerses students in cutting-edge research, integrating bioinformatics, omics sciences, and flow cytometry. Through its strong connection to the San Raffaele Science Park, students gain access to a wide range of research opportunities in basic, pre-clinical, clinical, and translational medicine, fostering a modern interpretation of medical science and a passion for research.

Upon completing the six-year program, students earn the title of Medical Doctor, regardless of their chosen track. Tracks other than the General Track are selective, limited to 20 high-achieving students.

Additional program features
  • Customization: From the second year, students can specialize further alongside their core medical-surgical training.
  • Thesis research: The final semester is dedicated entirely to thesis research, conducted either at UniSR or another institution abroad.
  • Licensing rotations: Mandatory rotations ensure graduates can immediately work as doctors in Italy and pursue postgraduate specialization. A graduate from the San Raffaele MD Programs can also register to any Medical Board in the EU (Including UK-GMC).
  • Language requirements: English is the primary language of instruction, but Italian proficiency (B1 level) is required by the end of year two for effective patient communication. Italian language courses are provided to international students for free during the term time.
